78. Valdez, Alaska - Thompson Pass

We made it to Alaska!

Our first night stop was just beyond the border at the Seaton recreational area, random boondocking in a nice gravel lot. There were a few people around initially that were hiking in the area. It was very peaceful.

The next day we took off towards Valdez. We stocked up at the grocery store in Tok. The highway going South from Tok towards Valdez had some very nice mountain views that we kept stopping to look at. We saw our first moose! We meant to stop partway to Valdez for the night, but Jordan was napping at the critical point so we pushed forward to not interrupt her.

We next tried to boondock in Thompson Pass, but the spot we were trying was too unlevel for us to be safe and it was raining a lot, so we decided to be comfortable and continue the last 30 min or so to Valdez RV Park where we were planning to stay the next day anyway. We looked online and they at least had something open. When we got there, they were able to move us so we could stay in the same spot for our entire stay. We were thankful to get there after the long drive and all the rain at the end. Once we got inside and dried off with the heat going, we were able to relax. The end of the drive got a little stressful because we were running low on diesel as well since we had passed the gas station because Jordan was sleeping (same place as the first potential night stop). Bruce had to go out in the rain and use one of our 5 gallon diesel tanks to get us to town safely.

The next day the weather cooperated enough and we went to the hatchery nearby. We ate our buy 1 get 1 free subway subs in the truck before going out (that deal was so good that we went nearly every day since it was a short walk). Bruce was warned that a family photo was being taken and kept eating despite several photo attemps being ruined. The tiny photographer was out again.

There was one nice waterfall right there at the hatchery, and it was only a short drive to Bridal Veil falls and Horsetail falls along the main highway to town. We returned to the RV for the night, or so we thought.

The clouds started breaking up more in the early evening and so we decided to head back out to Thompson Pass to see the sunset. We stopped at Blueberry Lake as well (last photo here). The outing was well worth it. That was one of the top sunsets of the trip with the clouds interspersed among the mountains with nice colors. The sky looked like a painting. It was hard to leave.
