87. Whittier & Talkeetna, Alaska

After Homer, we headed back North out of the peninsula towards Denali. On the way, we stopped for a night in Whittier at Williwaw campground. We had the best site with a nice mountain view.

Once we got set up, we unloaded the bikes to head over to the bike path we had just driven along since it had amazing views along the water. There was a salmon viewing platform in the campground as well. It was weird looking straight down at them just chillin.

It was great to be out in the fresh air on the bikes after the drive. Bruce was sick, but he rallied to join the crew.

This was where we made the first attempt to see the Northern lights since they were supposed to be out, but failed. The light in the distance was from Anchorage here we think.

On the way out of Whittier, we stopped at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and saw a bunch of animals, including a newborn baby musk ox.

Next, we headed to Talkeetna. On the drive up, we got that distinct Fall season feeling as the trees were changing colors. We stopped at the Denali viewpoint almost into town and got our first peek at Denali. We were confused at first thinking it was one of the peaks of those lower darker mountains until the clouds shifted and revealed the super high white peak of Denali. Since it was only a few minutes away, Anjuli went back at sunset to take some more photos which came out with a strange quality since there was a flat layer of clouds between Denali and the lower peaks. It made it seem like two different worlds.

The next day, we strolled around town, looked out over the water (no Denali out today), and got some great pizza and bread at one of the restaurants. It's a nice place to relax for a few days before heading to Denali.
